That is if I actually had a workbench. But here are some photos of my work in progress. I got John Mayes cigar box uke dvd and have been having fun with this. Enjoy!

I have the final sanding and pore filling on the neck, do the frets, then make the bridge/nut/saddle. I already french polished the top and used steel wool to give it a satin look. Maybe by Christmas I'll be done if time allows. Thanks for looking!

Nice Uke!!
Say...I smoke cigars and some of the brands use solid spanish cedar boxes...smells good too. And the are already stained outside, usually dark brown. If anyone want one let me know. They will surely make a great sounding instrument. These boxes do not have paper on them. They use reall hinges and all spanish cedar wood.

That looks like good wood. It's surprising how nice these little boxes can sound when everything comes together right.

Be sure to post pix and sound clips when it's finished!

It looks to me like you put a nice plank of wood on one side of that box, or is that the natural wood the box is made from?

I saw cigar box violins (really fiddles I guess) on display in a craft show in Asheville. They sounded pretty good.

Thanks for all the kind comments! To build this uke you remove the bottom of the cigar box and install your own wood. I had recieved some redwood from our group buy about a year ago, and the pieces on the outside to protect the inside pieces were cutoffs, and they were gorgeous pieces of redwood! I just wish my box was a little thicker, then I think this uke would really sing. We'll soon find out. I'll post pics and sound clips when I'm done.

Oh yea, and John, I wish you had some pics of the cigar box violin, I'd love to make one of those. I guess it is similar to a cigar box uke. Maybe John can build one and make another DVD, then I may have a shot of doing it

Tracy,
Neat project and a good way to put that redwood to use. Sometimes it's nice to just bust out a fun project. I'll bet that a cigar box banjo would be neat too.

Ditto on the pics and sound clips.

Hey Tracy,
The neck angle (yaw) is off.
